A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker
Gwen Stefani is best known as the spunky platinum blonde frontwoman of the popular bubblegum ska band No Doubt. To get the role of Gene Harlow in the Academy Award Nominated Motion picture The Aviator, Gwen Stefani admits that she crash dieted to squeeze into the tiny constumes. First of all there were no multiple costumes...just one. Her total airtime in the movie was about 90 seconds. She had exactly one line....and she starved herself for this.

Gwen Stefani at most (pre starvation diet) might have been a size 8. That isn't even large to begin with. Now she looks like a skeleton....all for what? A one liner in a so so movie. What kind of message is this sending women?

She did it to look like Jean Harlow. The part the actress was playing called for her to look like the bombshell movie legend. The movie-going public would have expected nothing less. You're point is taken that crash diets, may not be the way to do this, but the weight will come back.

Many actors and actresses put on and take off weight to look more the part.

But if you look at pics of Jean Harlow she wasn't skin and bones.

True, but Harlow had years and natural body chemistry to obtain her look. Stefani did the best with what she had. Given time, she could have lost the weight naturally, but that might not have been an option. It was probably a bigger Harlow or a skin and bones one. Clothes cover a lot.

What I'm saying is Jean Harlow was probably about a size 14....not a zero...Gwen Stefani looks like she's a 0.

stefani didn't need to lose the weight

I guess she thought she needed to lose the weight. She may not have had too, but she thought she did. Trying to portray someone of that stature is a daunting task. It's not an excuse for the loss, just a reason.

or...(here's a novel concept)....why didn't the casting director just hire someone who naturally looked the part?? it's not like they raked in a bunch of publicity off of casting her or anything (i didn't even realize that she was in it until your post).

Chrissy,

That's just not the way parts are handed out in Hollywood these days.

Anorexia is phat!!!

i agree Chrissy, i think she totally raked in a bunch for the movie...

I also agree with Gideon that parts are handed out for other reasons...like publicity...hehe

Jeremy...go rant on to someone else.

I'm sure she got casted cause she kinda resembled the classy look, but she does have an athletic build so I can understand why she had to drop the weight because of her body shape, she'd look a little to "buff" for the part. . But hopefully, this won't turn into a trend for her cause she is a beautiful woman.

Oh yeah:D

By the way, Is the Aviator a pretty good movie. I know it's been nominated for a few awards, but some oscar films are usually overrated.
