A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker

The Summer of 1996 has all of the makings of an after school special, thus the reason it needed to be separated into two parts.

That school year Katie, Michelle, and I decided to take another friend under our wing. Ironically enough, her name is Katie. She fit right into our circle of friends. Grade school Katie was the girly girl of the group, Michelle was the tom boy, the other Katie was the quiet one, and I was the loud mouth. We spent most of our free time on the phone, having call waiting wars with each other, and dreaming of our current school crushes of the year.

Grade school Katie, Michelle, and myself liked Jason, Kyle, and Jeremy; a fraction of guys much like the alliance we had created with eachother, while Katie H. was in love with prepster boy Mitch W. Of course we would call them every other day and ask them out. Finally Kyle caved in at one of Michelle's advances and said he would convince his guys to meet with us at a local carnival.

We all met at my house and it took over two hours for all of us to get made up to meet with our hopefully-soon-to-be-boyfriends. Since the carnival was very close to Mitch's house, Katie had even written down walking directions to his house! (Looking back at all of this, It's no wonder these boys thought we were crazy...we were very stalker-like).

Anyways, we arrived and waited for Kyle, Jeremy, and Jason to show up. A half an hour passed, and still, no one came around. Then we turned the corner. We saw Kyle, but Jeremy and Jason were no where in sight. Instead of bringing them, Kyle brought Thomas, who had the largest crush on grade school Katie, while she wanted nothing to do with him.

Kyle and Thomas fawned over Michelle and grade school Katie. It was starting to make Katie and myself sick. We decided to ditch them and try to find Mitch's house. After about an hour of frantically walking around and bitching about the other two, we came back to notice that the guys had won the other remaining girls boat loads of prizes from fair games.

By this point Katie and I were livid. We took one of Kyle's stupid blow up softballs that he won at a fast pitch station and decided to play monkey in the middle with it. Since I was pissed off, I threw the stupid blow up ball incredibly far. It ended up landing in the back of a truck that drove away! Then Kyle took a dinosaur that Thomas had won for Katie and threw it up in a giant tree!

At this point grade school Katie and Michelle were irate at us. After all, we had convinced the boys to do stupid things to the prizes they had won. To this day I think it's the boys' fault for giving us the ball to play with, and well, the dinosuar is no doubt Kyle's fault.

AFter that day our fraction would no longer be the same. It was Katie and myself against Michelle and grade school Katie.

(to be continued)

(part two is where the juicy bits are!)
