A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker
Published on June 29, 2005 By alison watkins In Misc
For the past two days I have been waking up around 4 am, bright eyed, bushy tailed, and ready to face my day. I guess this wouldn't be a problem, but being that I fell asleep right around 10:45 for the past two nights it seems to create a lack of sleep. I am trying to figure out what is the culprit of this behavior.

Last night I...
Exercised in the evening, as oppose to in the morning
had a yogurt after 9
crashed out for 20 minutes right after South Park

and the night before I....
fell asleep at 9 and woke up at 10 and officially went to bed a little after 10:30

hmmm...maybe I'm onto something with the little cat naps before I'm ready to crash for the long haul....I'll try avoiding them today.

I think this whole east coast living is affecting my mornings as well. For example, it's a little after 5:30 and it's very bright outside. In Ohio, the sun usually would rise around 6 am.

I am now rambling...maybe I should just shut up and go exercise...

I was wonering where in the world you have been (or maybe it's because I haven't posted in a while)! Looks like you're up pretty early, too. Anyways, it's good to see you and good points btw.

No no, you've got it all wrong. The correct response is something along the lines of 'but I don't like worms, they are icky' And yeah, I'm up early too. Is actually rather nice, went outside for a bit and enjoyed the weather before it got all toasty (which it will later today I'm sure).

If you're waking up on your own, as opposed to something/someone waking you, then your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Napping will definately affect your regular sleep and you should avoid it if you feel like you're waking too early or not getting enough regular sleep.

Have you relatively recently started an exercise program? If so, you'll find that causes your body to have more energy and require less sleep. People who need to sleep a lot are usually less healthy or less physically fit. Just a thought.

Relocating to a new place can also interrupt your normal sleep habits for a while. If that's all it is you'll adjust.

It's interesting that you mention the sun...because even though we moved in different directions, I'm having the same problem! (stupid Indiana and their non-observance of DST) Here, the sun is completely risen by 5am. I always wake up early in an absolute panic attack because I think that I've overslept!

My sleep habits have also been completely screwed up. I guess great minds think (and sleep) alike!

Moving from one time zone to another can really screw your sleep up for a while. Truckers are constantly sleeping in different time zones. You could try what truckers do and make sure the room is totally darkened. Use heavy curtains/shades that block out all light from the windows.

This really helped me while trucking. Trucks are equipped with heavy sleepr curtains and seal out light using velcro or a zipper to close them nice and tight. It really does help.

Sounds like napping before bed time is the culprit Alison. What's been happening to me too is I get up at 5:30am to powerwalk too. I'm back inside by 6am and I exercise some more til around 7am. I don't go back to sleep because I have to begin my day. I get home around 5:30 or after and I have dinner, mess around with the kids, read, watch telly and by 7:30pm I'm nodding like crazy, sometimes in the middle of the kids having a conversation with me...which annoys them! But I can't help it....yawn...mommy is soooo tired and I nap for half hour or an hour! It's crazy but it's been happening like that for me too. Obviously I need to get to bed earlier and stop napping in the evenings. I go to bed really, really late...yawn....

MAson:
Interesting theories. I think the napping is the culprit.

Chrissy:
I swear the clock just throws things off!! DST is something that we grew up with and now your schedule is all messed up because of wonderful Indian! Bastards! hehe

Foreverserenity:
Why are we being punished for exercising..haha...I think I nap because I don't want to face the fact that I really could be asleep very early, very easily!
