A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker
wtf?!

I turned on the TV this afternoon to find a new add for JC Penney. It revolved around Valentine's Day, having presents falling out of red balloons. The 80s hit 99 Luftballons ( english translation: 99 red balloons) by German singer Nena was playing in the back ground of the commercial. DID THEY NOT RESEARCH THE MEANING OF THE SONG?!

Nena wrote the song as a nuclear war protest. Red balloons were used to signal nuclear attack....and now JC Penney is using it as a cute little catch phrase to sell crap.

Is a nice song, I like it. And I doubt they care about the meaning, all they want is a pretty jingle to sell things with. Silly marketing.

Neun Und Neunsig Luftballoons translates to Ninety Nine Air Balloons.  The American pop scene decided that red balloons sounded better.

The rest of your explanation as to the song is correct tho.

Hahahaha...that's funny! I hadn't ever given it much thought. It is a catchy little tune, though.

While I do enjoy the song..I just thought that maybe they would have known the meaning...

Now everyone who shops at penney's can be a hero....everyone's a Captain Kurk (to quote the American version of the song).

i agree and i was so pissed that i called the corporate office and complained. i was not the only one that had either if you or anyone else would like to do the same here is the number 972.431.1000 i would encourage it because i think that it is time for the disgusting people who make the unresearched commercials to be held accountable for it. Thank you for posting this

I haven't seen the commercial in a few days...I wonder if it's off the air...

I was in Germany staying with friends when Neun und Neunsiche Luftballons came out. Even in the British language translation the lyrics are clearly about nuclear war.

Advertising has been out of control for a while now...but this commercial is especially assinine.

Dharma-
I totally agree with you...I mean the song is playing, and lingerie is popping out of these red balloons. It's just a slap in the face.
