A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker
I'm back

Hey everyone...long time no blog. Anyways, things are going pretty well. We just got back from our honeymoon on the outter banks where the tempurature was 70 degrees every day. Now we're back in NY where the temperature is lucky to be above 20. Actually, I'm back and Hardin just left on a gig with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has to play a party for the innoguration (sp?).....hey....even though it's supporting the W, atleast he's making money, right?

Anyways, I'm pretty excited because I have two job interviews next week. The first one is for teaching a mommy and me music class here on Long Island--which sounds like a blast, and the second one is for teaching instrumental music in Manhattan---what great location! I'm kind of nervous about them because I've never been on a real professional interview! Wish me luck!

As promised I said I would blog about life as a New Yorker. Everyone I've met so far here seems to live and die NY. They look at me like I'm a foreigner. It's very bizzare. When I say I'm from Ohio they look at me and ask what it's like to live on a farm. Actually where I'm from in Ohio looks a lot like this suburb I am living on in Long Island. People can't believe it. It cracks me up that this is supposed to be a great cultural metropolitian area and it can't even look past it's own nose. Don't get me wrong, I am really enjoying myself, but this place needs to get over itself!

I guess I'm just not used to it yet. I'm sure everything will work out. I just need to get comfortable in my surroundings.

The first thing that you have to understand is that New York is the center of the civilized world. Just ask anyone that lives there!

New Yawkers are the most parochial people in the world. Their universe is small and self-contained. Going to New Jersey is considered travel abroad. They are constantly puzzled that the world doesn't share their opinions.

By the way, no one from Manhattan would actually consider Lon Gisland (that's how its pronounced by the residents) to be part of New Yawk proper.

As a former resident of New Yawk (for over 30 years) my advice is to get a cuppa kawfee and fuhgedaboutit.

Smile, it makes them nervous!

Loved the response! Haha...maybe I should try this smiling thing that you speak of. I make my first solo trip into "The City" on Wednesday for a job interview. Wish me luck!!

You lucked out!  It is not going to be in the 70s there again for many moons!  Glad it was perfect for you tho, and welcome back!

Welcome back Alison. So, you're a New York gal now uh! Well, I understand a little of what you feel. I lived there for 14 years! I'm in Florida now and I feel like the foreigner! You'll get used to it after a while. Just smile a lot like Larry says. Just don't be smiling too much by yourself or people will look at you as if you're the crazy one! Good luck on the interviews. Just be yourself and sell yourself, that's what usually gets me through when I interviewed there. And dress up a bit too, not over the top, just really put yourself together. Have fun and I look forward to hearing more about your life in NY. My brother still lives there and he did say it's pretty cold - yikes!
