A day in the life of an Ohioan turned New Yorker

Today I had my first meeting with a personal trainer. He gave me some great advice and said I was already on the right track with things.

I was a little nervous for my pre-workout evaluation, just because all of the clinical hype (aka getting weighed...ahh!!) reminds me of going to the doctor. He told me because of my frame (large) and height (5'2") not to measure my success in pounds, but body fat content instead. Today my body fat content was measured as 27%-the high side of average. My 3 month goal plan is to get that down to a 24 by building muscle mass.

He evaluated my cardio routine---I got a thumbs up.

He said my weight training sucks! Due to all of my repetitions with the free weights, it was just turning into cardio and I wasn't getting any strength benefits from it. I now have an intense circuit to follow 3 days a week that include ab work, leg work, back work, and arm work to get stronger all over.

I'm supposed to have another appointment with him in 3-6 months to track my progress. I'm pretty stoked!

Here was my workout today
45 minutes of weight circuit
22 minutes of jogging-2.2 miles

The heavier weights you lift, the more muscle tone you get.  Lots of women make the 3,5,10 lb mistake...lifting those puny weights over and over...you're right..its a cardio thing.

Breaking muscle down to rebuild stronger and harder muscle takes real weight.  You shouldn't be able to lift a specific weight more than 10 times or its too light.

Good luck!
